Dental resins or dental fillings are essential restorative treatments to treat tooth decay. When decayed parts of a tooth are removed, a dental filling is applied in the resulting gap to restore the structural integrity and function of the tooth.
These fillings are usually composed of materials such as composite resin, the color of which can be matched to the natural shade of the tooth, ensuring a discreet and perfect result. By effectively sealing decay and preventing bacterial intrusion, dental fillings halt the progression of decay and protect the tooth from further damage. Beyond their restorative function, dental fillings play a crucial role in maintaining overall oral health.

Dental bonding or dental resin is a form of bonding that makes esthetic dentistry possible and is intended to repair small cracks and damage to teeth. Bonding materials are made up of composites that are matched to the exact color, shape and size of your teeth to create a perfect fit. In addition, dental resin can be used to fill small cavities and prevent them from expanding or becoming infected.
No, dental bonding is not permanent, but depending on how well you take care of your oral health, it can last a long time. Dental bonding can last 5 to 10 years if you take good care of your teeth and practice excellent oral hygiene, such as brushing your teeth at least three times a day and flossing every night before going to bed. You should also try to refrain from consuming too many sugary drinks and foods.
While there is no set recovery time after dental bonding, since it is not a major oral procedure, you should try to avoid consuming any foods or beverages that may stain your teeth for at least 24-48 hours afterwards. Tea, coffee, chocolate and sugary drinks should be avoided completely. Smokers are also advised to refrain from cigarettes or cigars during this period as well.
Unless you have severe tooth sensitivity, there is no reason why you should feel any pain or discomfort during the resin procedure. In some cases, dentists do not even have to apply a local anesthetic to the area, as they are only working on the surface of the tooth.
Can a dental resin repair a broken tooth?
Yes, one of the main reasons for undergoing this procedure is to repair broken or cracked teeth. However, dental bonding can only be used to make minor repairs to the surface or enamel of a tooth. Major repairs such as internal cracks require much deeper dental work and may even require surgery.
Depending on the size of the damage, the amount of composite material needed, and the location of the crack in the mouth, the application of a dental resin could take between 30-60 minutes.
