Self-ligating orthodontics

Self-ligating orthodontics

What is Self-Ligating Orthodontics?

Self-ligating brackets are an orthodontic system that uses special brackets that do not require ligatures (also known as rubber bands). This is because each bracket contains a clip that allows it to be attached to the archwire. Thus, there is no need for ligatures to attach the brackets to the archwire. The main difference between self-ligating brackets and traditional brackets is their fastening system. That is, the way in which the bracket is attached to the archwire. Traditional brackets need ligatures to transmit the force of the archwire to the bracket. Self-ligating brackets, on the other hand, do not use ligatures. Instead, they contain a clip, which is able to transmit all the force to the teeth through the bracket. And, in this way, they perform the movements planned by the orthodontist. Self-ligating brackets are recommended for anyone interested in correcting alterations in the bite and alignment of their teeth: crowding, open bite, overbite, diastemas (gaps between teeth), crossbite, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is self-ligating orthodontics?

Self-ligating brackets use an integrated system to attach the archwire to the brackets. This system is also known as self-ligating brackets. This ligation method is different from traditional braces, where small rubber bands or rubber bands are applied to the brackets to hold the archwire in place.

Are self-ligating brackets tightened?

Thanks to the new technology used in self-ligating brackets, there is no need for tensioning. Because self-ligating brackets do not require tensioning, appointments throughout treatment are spaced farther apart than with conventional treatment. In many cases the actual time during appointments is also shorter.

Do self-ligating appliances work faster?

Some types of braces are more effective at different phases of treatment. Active self-ligating appliances can help move teeth faster during the initial phases of treatment, but moving them from the root will certainly require patience.

Are self-ligating brackets painful?

Self-ligating brackets are a great option for people looking for a more comfortable way to achieve a perfect smile. They are designed to be less painful than traditional braces, with special clips that make them easier to wear and clean.

How long does it take to complete treatment with self-ligating brackets?

This is a question many people ask about self-ligating appliances. However, the answer varies depending on several factors, such as the severity of dental misalignment or bite problems and the degree to which the orthodontist's treatment recommendations are followed. Generally, it can take 18 to 24 months for self-ligating appliances to be fully effective and produce the desired changes in the teeth and jaw.
