Dental bite splints, also known as occlusal splints or night splints, are oral appliances that are placed over the teeth to protect them from grinding, clenching or excessive forces during sleep or physical activity.
These guards are custom-made to fit the individual's mouth and provide a cushioning effect, preventing tooth damage, jaw pain and headaches associated with bruxism (teeth grinding) or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD). They help distribute forces evenly, reduce muscle tension and provide a barrier between the upper and lower teeth.
They prevent dental damage by acting as a cushioning barrier against grinding and clenching forces, relieve jaw pain and headaches associated with bruxism, and improve sleep quality by reducing noise and discomfort caused by teeth grinding. Bite guards promote oral health by preventing tooth damage and preserving dental restorations, and offer a comfortable, customized fit that does not interfere with speech or breathing. They are versatile and provide protection during sleep and physical activities such as sports.
Overall, dental bite guards offer significant advantages in preventing dental damage, relieving jaw pain, improving sleep quality and supporting oral health, contributing to a healthier and more comfortable oral environment.

A night guard, also called a dental splint or occlusal guard, is a dental device worn by the patient over the teeth to prevent grinding. They are usually recommended for patients who have problems with bruxism, which is when the upper and lower teeth grind and clench together. Since bruxism usually occurs at night, most often the patient is unable to control it. When this is the case, the general dentist may recommend a night guard to prevent symptoms such as chipped, cracked and worn teeth and the development of TMJ disorder.
Most general dentists recommend wearing the shield every night. That said, each patient is unique. Depending on the cause, some patients may grind their teeth only occasionally. For example, someone who grinds his or her teeth when stressed may not need to wear the guard every night. For best results, it is recommended that the brace be worn consistently, but skipping it from time to time is not a cause for concern.
Too many people who grind their teeth at night choose not to wear a mouth guard because they believe it will be uncomfortable and disrupt their sleep. A custom night guard made by a dentist will offer the most comfortable fit. Many of those who start wearing a custom-made night guard report sleeping better, which is not surprising, considering that teeth grinding is not comfortable at all.
It is important to keep the night guard clean to prevent the buildup of food particles and bacteria that can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease. To keep it clean, simply rinse it daily and brush it with toothpaste (although a safe, less abrasive cleaning material may work better). If the night guard becomes damaged, it is best to replace it as soon as possible.
